Department of Agronomy UGM Holds Occupational Health and Safety Workshop to Improve Laboratory and Field Safety

Yogyakarta, 14 August 2025. The Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada, organized an Occupational Health and Safety Workshop under the theme “Promoting a Safety Culture: Hazard-Free Laboratories and Research Fields.” The workshop was held at the KPTU Room, third floor of Building A1, Faculty of Agriculture UGM, on Thursday from 09.00 to 12.00 WIB.

The event was officially opened by the Head of the Department of Agronomy, Rani Agustina Wulandari, S.P., M.P., Ph.D., who emphasized the importance of occupational health and safety practices in supporting academic activities, particularly student research conducted in laboratories and field settings. Following the opening remarks, participants completed a pre-test to assess their initial understanding of safety procedures. The workshop continued with material presentations delivered by faculty members and laboratory representatives, covering fundamental principles of occupational safety, proper use of personal protective equipment, safety regulations and administrative procedures in each sub-laboratory, case studies, and interactive discussions.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants undertook a post-test to evaluate their level of understanding after the training, followed by a group photo session. Based on the post-test results, students were eligible to receive a certificate, which serves as a prerequisite for laboratory use during research activities, including undergraduate thesis projects and research permits within the Department of Agronomy.

This workshop contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being by ensuring occupational safety in academic environments, SDG 4 on Quality Education through enhanced safety literacy among students, and SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production through the implementation of safe, efficient, and sustainable work practices in laboratories and research fields.
