UGM Master’s Student in Agronomy Participates in International Research Program SUIJI-JP-MS in Japan

A Master’s student in Agronomy from the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Lailan Aulia Nadhiroh, successfully participated in the international SUIJI-JP-MS Program (Six University Initiative Japan-Indonesia Joint Program for Master’s Students) in Japan. The program represents a collaboration between three Indonesian universities, namely Universitas Gadjah Mada, Institut Pertanian Bogor, and Universitas Hasanuddin, and three Japanese universities, namely Ehime University, Kagawa University, and Kochi University.

During the program, Lailan conducted research entitled “Effects of Different In-row Spacings on Intercepted Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD), Leaf Area Index (LAI), Photosynthetic Parameters, and Yield of Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)” under the supervision of academic advisors from both Indonesia and Japan. In addition to her research activities, she attended courses in Tropical Sciences and Japanese Language, while also taking opportunities to explore Japanese culture in various cities.

Her experience in Japan provided valuable academic and personal lessons. Lailan acknowledged facing challenges, particularly related to language adaptation and cultural differences. However, support from supervisors and laboratory colleagues enabled her to adjust smoothly. One of her most memorable experiences occurred when the laptop used for her research malfunctioned shortly before the reporting deadline. With assistance from laboratory staff and colleagues, she was able to continue her research without disruption.

Lailan also expressed admiration for the strong work ethic and work-life balance upheld by Japanese society. Despite intensive laboratory activities, students and faculty members consistently allocated time for physical exercise and leisure. She noted that the experience taught her the importance of working diligently while also maintaining mental well-being and enjoying life.

According to Lailan, the program broadened her academic perspective, fostered independence, and strengthened cross-cultural collaboration skills. She encouraged fellow students to participate in similar programs, emphasizing that international experiences provide valuable opportunities for learning and personal growth.

Lailan’s participation in the SUIJI-JP-MS Program contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the enhancement of global academic capacity, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) through sustainable agricultural research, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through international collaboration between Indonesian and Japanese universities.
