Buper Practice Highlights Chrysanthemums as a Creative and High-Marketability Business Opportunity

Yogyakarta, 9 May 2025 — The Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada held a Buper Practice event under the theme “Profit Field with Chrysanthemum Business: Chrysanthemum Cultivation and “Hamper” Creations. The activity was participated by general members of the public and educational staff (tendik) from the Faculty of Agriculture UGM who were interested in exploring deeper the business potential of ornamental plant cultivation, especially chrysanthemums. The main speaker was Yusuf M. Alfarih, S.P., owner of the business Kembang Djaya, who shared knowledge and direct experience in cultivating chrysanthemums and processing them into value-added products.

The Buper Practice consisted of two main parts: a material presentation session and a practical session. The event opened with remarks from the Chair of the Department of Agronomy, Rani Agustina Wulandari, S.P., M.P., Ph.D. In her speech she expressed appreciation for the enthusiasm of participants, and gratitude to the committee for their hard work and dedication in organizing the event. She also hoped that the event could serve as an applicative and inspiring learning platform, especially for developing agribusiness insights and skills in the floriculture sector.

After the material session, the activity proceeded to the practical session which was held at the Buper Learning Space (BLS). In this session, participants were divided into several groups and directed to follow two prepared activity stations: the seedling / nursery station and the flower arranging station. Each station was supervised by a team from the speaker, who guided the participants technically during the practice.

The groups were rotated in a split-session system, where half of the participants started at the nursery station while the others began at the flower arranging station. After the first session ended, the groups swapped stations to cover both parts of the training.

At the nursery station, participants were taught the basic steps in preparing chrysanthemum seeds/seedlings and growing media: from selecting seedlings, planting, to early care techniques. Meanwhile, at the flower arranging station, participants were guided to arrange chrysanthemum flowers into aesthetic displays. The flower arrangements were not packaged but were arranged in attractive forms to be presented at the end of the session.

To close the practical session, the flower arrangements from each group were displayed and judged by a panel. Judging was based on creativity, neatness, and visual beauty. Among all displayed works, the judges selected one arrangement as the best and awarded the winning group with prizes as appreciation for their work.

This Buper Practice activity not only provided knowledge and practical skills to participants, but also supports the achievement of several SDGs, such as SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). Through chrysanthemum cultivation and creative floral design, participants are encouraged to apply sustainable and innovative agribusiness practices.
