Yogyakarta, May 17, 2024 – The Master of Plant Breeding, Department of Agronomy at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada, played host to a captivating lecture today titled “Biotechnology in Action,” delivered by Ludovika Jessica Virginia, Ph.D. Dr. Virginia, an expert in Biomolecular Technology of Proteins, currently serves as a Laboratory specialist at a non-governmental organization.

Dr. Virginia’s impressive resume includes stints as a researcher in multinational companies and international academic institutions, bringing a wealth of practical and theoretical knowledge to the event. Her presentation provided a comprehensive overview of the application of biotechnology in the industrial sector, focusing on enzyme engineering and the utilization of bacteria in fermentation processes.

During the lecture, Dr. Virginia emphasized the significant role biotechnology plays in agricultural industrialization, from upstream to downstream activities. “Biotechnology is integral to creating a more efficient and sustainable agricultural industry. By engineering enzymes and utilizing bacterial fermentation, we can significantly enhance production processes and product quality,” she stated.

The session shed light on the critical need for synergy across various scientific disciplines. Dr. Virginia stressed that a directed and purposeful application of biotechnology is essential for achieving sustainable global advancements. “Biotechnology must have a clear direction for a goal because this tool is a real form of application of science for future change,” she remarked.

The lecture was attended by members of the UGM academic community, including lecturers and students, as well as researchers and agricultural entrepreneurs. The audience engaged actively, posing insightful questions and discussing the practical implications of the presented material.

One participant inquired about the accessibility of biotechnological innovations for small-scale farmers. Dr. Virginia responded by highlighting the necessity for collaborative efforts. “It’s essential to develop policies and frameworks that support the dissemination of these technologies. Collaboration between scientists, industry leaders, and policymakers is key to making biotechnological advancements universally accessible,” she explained.

Dr. Virginia’s lecture provided not only a deep dive into the intricacies of enzyme engineering but also a broader perspective on the transformative potential of biotechnology in agriculture. Her insights continue to inspire and guide efforts toward a more integrated and effective application of scientific advancements.

The event underscored the importance of ongoing research and collaboration in the field of biotechnology, aiming to foster a sustainable and prosperous future for global agriculture. Through this activity, the Department of Agricultural Cultivation shows its commitment to achieving the goals of SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnership to Achieve the Goals.
